How to Create a Highly Effective Keyword List

Recently I was asked to optimize a site selling Spanish T-Shirts to attract lots of traffic from the search engines. Without traffic your site won't make any sales. Of the other hand getting lots of traffic does not guarantee sales if your web copy is lousy.

There are many factors that should be considered when you optimize your web site. For my example site to optimize I chose Wild Lily Designs, a site that specializes in selling Spanish Shirts.

Here are the steps I took to optimize the site:

1. Create a keyword list

Write down all the keywords related to the topic of your site. Try to also include keyword phrases. ie T-Shirts, Spanish Shirts, Spanish Apparel, Spanish Clothing.

There are probably millions of web sites selling T-Shirts; therefore you need to narrow your focus. This is why Spanish Shirts or Spanish T-Shirts would a better niche because it wouldn't be as competitive. If your niche is too competitive you will have a difficult time getting high rankings. Ideally you want your site to appear on the first page for one of the major search engines...Google, MSN or Yahoo.

2. Find related keywords

These are words that are similar to the main keyword list you created above. You may be able to incorporate them into the content of your site as it grows. Keywords that have a very narrow focus ie Spanish T-Shirts, may not be a popular search term. If I broaden my search to include "Spanish" or "T-Shirt" I will find hundreds of words that relate to these topics.

Use a theosaurus dictionary or thesaurus.com to find similar words besides your main keywords. Another great free tool to brainstorm related keywords is the Google AdWords Keyword Tool (https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal).

Here is the list of similar keywords generated when I inserted "spanish shirts" in the Google AdWords Keyword Tool:

madrid shirts
language tee shirts
spain shirt
spanish shirt
shirts in spanish
spanish shirts
spanish t shirts
real madrid shirt
spanish english dictionary
spanish apparel sign language shirt
language shirts
madrid t shirts
shirt in spanish
hispanic t shirt
spain t shirt
language apparel
hispanic shirts
sign language t shirt
madrid t shirt
real madrid t shirts
language t shirts sign
language shirts
language shirt
shirts spanish
sign language t shirts
spanish t shirt
real madrid merchandise
i love shirts
hispanic t shirts
long sleeve shirts
spain t shirts
t shirts in spanish
madrid shirt

From this list you get both the singular and plural forms of the keywords. You may also want to include madrid shirts, madrid t-shirt, spanish shirts.

To find out how often people are searching on these keywords you need to use keyword tools. I use a combination of both free and paid tools.

Wordtracker is the most popular and effective SEO tool used by search engine marketers. WordTracker allows you to do a comprehensive search for related keywords, provides the number of searches for your keywords, then compares their popularity in the search engines with how competitive they are. Ideally you want to use keywords that receive a high number of searches but don't have many competing web sites for the same keyword.

Using the free trial at WordTracker my comprehensive search for Spanish Shirts generates this list:

1. spanish shirts
2. spanish clubs
3. football shirts
4. overseas clubs
5. ebay
6. online shopping
7. online auction
8. apparel
9. spanish
10. t-shirts
11. sports memorabilia
12. ebay.co.uk
13. Spanish
14. real madrid
15. tshirt

The enhanced version would display 285 keywords here. If I click on Spanish Shirts I get a table showing keywords taken from all Dogpile & Metacrawler queries over the last 90 days.

Count = 4 This shows the number of times a particular keyword has appeared in the database.

E.g. The database currently holds 327967786 words. A count of 4 tells you that this particular word has appeared 4 times (this is over 90 days). The keywords are taken from major metacrawlers (a service that queries all the main search engines simultaneously).

Predict = 7 This is the maximum total predicted traffic for all of the major search engines/pay per bids and directories today.

Since Spanish Shirts generates a small number of searches, I will search on a broader term ie Spanish or T-Shirts

Spanish

spanish 3407 6009
spanish dictionary 3183 5614
spanish translator 2295 4048
spanish music lyrics 2114 3728
spanish translation 1892 3337
spanish english dictionary 1352 2384
english to spanish 1049 1850 dig
spanish to english dictionary 1040 1834
spanish to english 1033 1822
spanish babes 990 1746
learn spanish 989 1744
spanish american war 987 1741
english to spanish translation 778 1372
spanish to english translation 747 1317
english to spanish dictionary 745 1314

The first number beside each keyword is the count, the second is the predicted number. The list above generates higher numbers than Spansih Shirts because of their popularity. This is useful because it gives you another angle to attract traffic to your web site. For example you could create a page on how to learn spanish by integrating the keywords "learn spanish" in your article. The traffic this page receives may help sell more Spanish Shirts because the visitors will visit the rest of the site.

T-Shirts

Here are the related words for the keyword T-Shirts generated by WordTracker.

1. t-shirts
2. funny t-shirts
3. tshirts
4. t-shirt
5. tee shirts
6. tshirt
7. shirts
8. tees
9. funny t-shirt
10. funny shirts
11. cool t-shirts
12. tee
13. funny t shirts
14. funny
15. humorous

If you do a deeper search on t-shirts you get:

t-shirts 1146 2021
t-shirt 805 1420
funny t-shirts 622 1097
custom t-shirts 375 661
christian t-shirts 185 326
t-shirt designs 180 317
blank t-shirts 147 259
t-shirt design 146 257
japanese t-shirt 145 256
wholesale t-shirts 139 245
white t-shirt 126 222
vintage t-shirts 123 217
white t-shirts 111 196
cool t-shirts 102 180
rolling stones t-shirts 102 180

If you subscribe to the paid version of wordtracker you will get another 85 words. You also have the choice of digging deeper on each of the keywords above if you want to view words related to the one you chose.

Conclusion.

Doing keyword research before you write the content for your web site will help you to identify what angles you can use to attract the search engine spiders. If you create different pages that include these keywords you gain extra traffic because they receive a high number of searches.

How To Spot A Legitimate Mlm Business Opportunity

Multi level marketing or MLM is a type of home business that provides a lot of opportunity.Multi level marketing can enable a person to make a lot of money if they understand the concepts behind it. An MLM business opportunity is something that is widely available so many people looking to get into a home business will likely be faced with a MLM business and they should understand the basics of MLM before ever considering going into this type of business.

Multi level marketing is often confused with a pyramid scheme. The reason for this is in both types of set ups people make money from getting other people into the business. However, with MLM there are actual products and actual money to be made. The people a person brings into the business is only like a bonus income, not their main source of income.

Typically, a person signs up for a MLM under someone else who is already operating their MLM business. What happens then is that for every sale the person makes the person they signed up under will get a commission on. To simplify look at this sample scenario:

Person B signs up under Person A.
Person B sells 100 products.
Person B gets a commission on their sales and Person A also gets a commission on the sales.

Additionally, whenever Person B signs up people under him, Person A gets a commission of their sales. So it is like this:

Person B signs up Person c.
Person C makes 100 sales.
Person C, Person B and Person A all get a commission on Person C’s sales.

This continues one as each person signs up new people and makes sales. It all trickles up the MLM system to Person A, with everyone else getting a commission as well along the way.

The majority of the time it is free to join an MLM business opportunity. In most cases when a deposit or money is charged upfront this is a good indicator of a pyramid scheme, not a MLM business opportunity.

Legitimate MLM business opportunities are going to provide a good product and they are going to be focused on selling the product by providing training and additionally resources to help their people sell. They will also provide the option of signing up new members, however, it is generally optional and not mandatory in order to make money.

When looking for a MLM business opportunity a person has to understand the difference between an MLM and a pyramid scheme. On the surface they may both look the same, but once a person starts working they will soon discover they are very different. Pyramid schemes are illegal because in the end the money dries up and people are left without any business at all. With a legitimate MLM business opportunity the ability to make money will always exist as long as there is a demand for the product.

Google Adwords Success Tips Vol. 1

When you use Google Adwords and can’t be certain of what keyword matching option you must use, then you can enter all three variations you have in your keywords list. For instance:

Art Posters
“Art Posters”
[Art Posters]

After using them for some time you can check the clickthrough rates of the keywords and delete the ineffective keyword combinations.

Always use the negative keywords feature. For example if someone uses the search term “free art posters” then you should use the negative keyword –free in the Google appropriate field and in result your keyword “Art Poster” will not be displayed.

By doing that you avoid the freebie seekers who are not targeted in your offer and as result you improve your clickthrough rates and reduce the cost of your campaigns. You can also use similar with the “free” term such as:

-no charge
-no cost
-costless
-chargeless

and so on.

The keywords number factor. The age of creating an ad group and load 4000 keywords instantly is over. Although there is not a specific rule for how many keywords you should use, follow Google’s recommendations on the amount of keywords. Google recommends: maximum 100 Ad groups per campaign and 750 keywords per Ad group.

Targeted but not over targeted. So many people loose money because of that reason. If you have yoga training center in Florida it’s obvious that people from New York won’t be interested in your services. So displaying a general term such as “Yoga” or even “Yoga training center” will display your ad on Google Adwords and prospects with no interest in your offer will click your Ad which means extra cost for your campaigns and not transformed into sales.

On the other hand if you use a specific term like:

“Yoga Training Center in Florida”

You have more targeted clickthroughs, targeted prospects and eventually more sales.

But there is a drawback on that tactic. If you are extremely targeted and use a keyword of over 6-7 words it’s highly possible that no one will search for that term and have no clicks or even views for your Ad.

How to find keywords? You could use the Google keyword suggestion tool but because so many other Adwords users use it, the keywords from that tool are very expensive.

Other tools you can use are:

Overture suggestion Tool: http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion

123promotion Tool: http://www.123promotion.co.uk/ppc/index.php

Good Keywords: http://www.goodkeywords.com

These tools are free but if you want a more sophisticated and advanced option you can use word tracker paid service: http://www.wordtracker.com

Use always the plural form of your words. Don’t use “Yoga Training Report” but also “Yoga Training Reports”.

Exploit the misspelling errors. Research indicates the 12%-15% of the search phrases and words are misspelled. So don’t use only the term “staff” but also “stuff”.

Use hyphens. For example use both terms like: “Yoga Training Center” and “Yoga-Training-Center”

Use Acronyms: If you use the phrase “internet service provider” in your campaigns you can also use the acronym ISP in your Ads.

Use of domain names. This is powerful because it’s the most targeted term you can find. If your website’s domain name is www.yogatrainingcenter.com you must use it as keyword term.

Fatal Mistakes that can Kill your Adword Campaigns

There are a few online mistakes that you want to avoid when getting started with pay-per-click advertising and online business. These are common slips that can make a huge difference in your campaigns. Each time you start a new campaign or make a business move, check to make sure you aren't making one of the following mistakes.

The first mistake a lot of newbies make is lumping all of the keywords for a given campaign into a single group. Let's say you found 100 keywords you think will work for your campaign. This group can be broken down into subgroups that are more closely related together. For example, if you have a group of keywords related to tennis, the large group can be broken down into related keywords on tennis equipment, tennis clothes, tennis strokes etc. Breaking down the list into subgroups helps you reach a more targeted audience. Those customers looking for tennis equipment will respond to your ad targeted to that group of keywords. You can build a separate landing page for each subgroup, which will help more prospects respond to your offers.

Another big mistake is not using square brackets around keywords and phrases when entering them into Google Adwords. Using brackets (for example [tennis racquets]) will show your ad if and only if the keyword phrase tennis racquets is searched for. This technique further targets your marketing.

Keep in kind that Google Adwords is not a "set it and forget it" system. You need to track your results so you know which keywords are profitable. Tracking can help you shift your budget to put more emphasis on the most profitable keywords.

It is vital to have a website that is neat and clean. If your website is sloppy, you look unprofessional and your customer will be less likely to return. A clean website, free of spelling and grammatical errors, instills a level of trust in you and your company. Make sure all of your links work and remember to keep your pages simple. Anytime you ask a reader to hear an audio, click a list of testimonials or any other activity that requires them to click away, you are creating an opportunity for them to leave the site before getting to the end of your message. A streamlined site with less "bells and whistles" will be much more profitable.

Always use the "review" technique to sell something. Outright sales pitches turn people off. Instead, provide a review of the product you are trying to sell. If the reader perceives you as a reviewer you appear more objective, less biased and more truthful. Writing reviews of affiliate products or services that you want to promote will help boost your sales.

Another common mistake is receiving traffic from untargeted sources, such as pop-unders, safelists and free for all links. The whole point is to bring targeted traffic to your site that wants and needs the product or service you are offering. Accepting untargeted traffic is a waste of your time, and the reader's time.

It is very important to plan your online business, whether you are using a Google Adwords or a minisite. Don't just slap up the advertising or website and wait for a response. In order to succeed, you must have a plan. For example, couple your efforts with an auto responder series to send to your customers after they purchase from you. You can also set up an FAQ page where you can direct readers who have questions. Look for opportunities to upsell existing customers. Set up your marketing messages in advance so the process is automatic. Plan out your campaigns first before you begin and you will reap the benefits from that planning in the form of sales.

However, keep in mind that too much planning is a bad thing. Does this sound familiar? You just finished reading an ebook about writing sales letters. The book seems really complete and it walks you through the process. Instead of writing a practice letter though, you spend the next sixth months (or even a year!) looking for products and gathering information about writing sales letters. A lot of the process of becoming successful online is trying things out (and sometimes failing). Once you've done your initial research there is no product or ebook or website that will ensure success. Fear is the only thing that holds you back and sometimes you've just got to press on and try if you want to succeed with your business.

Another key to success, that many newbies forget, is to focus your online business efforts. Once you've got a system down well enough to get profits coming in, don't get yourself distracted with promising business opportunities that are unrelated to your current business plan. Stay focused on what is working for you and put all of the new ideas aside. Long-lasting Internet success relies on focusing and learning to do one thing at a time. Then take what you learn and apply it, but only after your first project in on autopilot.

It is essential to remain organized. Your filing system doesn't have to be fancy or complex. You can use something as simple as a cardboard box with manila folders if you want. The important thing is to have a system in place. It is very essential to keep subjects related to your topic in separate and labeled folders for easy reference. This will save you time later on when you need to find information.

Finally, it is imperative that you persevere in your business. So many newcomers give up too soon without realizing that success requires patience. As long as you are moving in the right direction by building your business you should keep going. Things are always slow at first, that's a natural part of business building. But you have to crawl before you can walk. Sometimes, it may be best to keep your business goals and dreams to yourself. There's never a shortage of negative people in life who can throw you off track and hold you down. Refuse to let that happen by keeping your goals to yourself and ignoring negative people.

By remaining focused and actively building your online business, you can avoid many of these common mistakes.

Why Businesses Need Internet Marketing

A common outlook towards website building and initiating online presence is that as soon as an online presence is established through the means of a website, visitors will start flowing in thus leading to business generation. This is the mother of all misconceptions. It is like creating a new email address and expecting to receive mails without doing anything else. One does need to let people know their email address before getting any mail. Similarly, people have to be made aware of your website's presence and thus the need for Internet Marketing.

Making people aware of your web presence can be achieved in various ways. You can begin by making use of the present printed material used in office. Printing the URL or the web address on visiting cards, quotations, invoices and any such other documentation can lead to free awareness generation. Using the website name in the present marketing means of flyers or media advertising will also help popularize the web presence. Make use of each and every opportunity to let people know of your website.

Once people have the website name in their heads, it is highly possible that they visit it at least once at their leisure. In this scenario, you can put in any advertisement or information or anything at all to keep the visitor updated and helps him/ her into making a buying decision. The above methods are just to kick you off on the interesting journey of internet marketing.

In today's fast paced world and with the advent and reach of the internet going beyond geographical boundaries, many a people are looking at the internet as a means of looking for products and services. Normally anyone would try to find it using a search engine like Google, Yahoo, Msn or Altavista. The normal procedure is to type the name of the product or the service in the search engine and search. The search engine then provides a list of websites which deal in the said product or service. This is the best place to find your customers, since people searching would be interested in the product or service right at that moment. The methods that you need to follow to achieve this are search engine optimization or other means like the pay per click method. Either way, you will meet with some success in a bid to increase your online business.

Despite being heard of before, people do not tend to remember the name of a website clearly, and even if they do, they have to remember it correctly. The margin of error is too high to get hits in the direct marketing method. Emphasis on search engine methods would keep your online business in good stead.

Using Press Releases to Generate Free Publicity for Your Home-Based Business

Local newspapers love to write articles about home-based entrepreneurs. In fact, if you wait long enough, a beat reporter will probably track you down. But why wait? Make the reporter's job easier and score some free publicity for your business by sending the newspaper a press release.

Why Would Newspapers Care About My Business? Almost everyone has fantasized about storming into their boss's office and saying, "Take this job and shove it!" When newspaper subscribers read about home-based business owners, they're able to live vicariously through your success. "You see, Marge, this guy did it - so can we!" Of course, Marge and her husband will probably never take the plunge into home-based business ownership, but that's beside the point. The point is that newspapers love to run articles about businesses just like yours - and reporters would love it if you made their jobs easier by sending them press releases.

A word of caution: If your home-based business is located in New York City, Chicago, Detroit, or even a "smaller" town like Green Bay or Portland, your odds of getting newspaper coverage are greatly diminished. Chances are, your home-based business will not be featured on the front page of the Los Angeles Times, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't give it a shot. Better yet, you can send your press releases to smaller publications specific to your industry.

How Do I Format My Press Release? Begin by using company letterhead. If you don't have any, now would be a fine time to make a minimal investment in the professionalism of your business's image. Or, if you prefer, you can create your own letterhead in a simple program like Microsoft Word. The result can be just as good if you're a skilled computer user.

Next, create an attention-grabbing headline for your press release. Just imagine what your dream headline would be if it could appear as written in the newspaper. Make sure your headline will really catch the editor's eye - newspaper editors get bombarded with dozens of press releases every day, so you have to make sure yours stands out. One good way to do this is to leave the reader wanting to find out more. Don't give away the whole story in your headline, just give them enough to catch their interest.

Your headline should be in a larger, bold-faced font. You can put a longer sub-title underneath it, more thoroughly explaining the purpose of the press release, but that's optional.

Next, you'll want to begin the actual body of the press release. Start with a dateline, such as Ann Arbor, MI (09/14/2006)--, all italicized as shown. Then make sure you write the most important information in the first paragraph, as many times editors will give up on a press release if it doesn't interest them in the first few sentences. You need to hook the reader in!

Some Final Tips on Crafting a Successful Press Release Your press release should be a maximum of one page. There are two reasons for this: 1) Editors are busy and unlikely to read anything longer than a page. And 2) the shorter your press release, the more likely it is to be published in verbatim. That's right, many times busy editors and reporters simply take a well-written press release and slap it into the next edition, so be sure that your article is well-written and error-free. If you're not a good writer, consider hiring an English major from the local university, or perhaps a freelance writer from the internet. There are several sites on the web where press release writers can be hired at affordable prices.

Finally, don't give up. If your first press release isn't gobbled up by the newspapers, send another - and another, and another. Make sure your press releases are actually newsworthy or would serve as interesting human interest stories, and send no more than one per month. Eventually, your persistence should pay off. Either you'll finally win over the editor, or he'll give in just to get you to stop sending the press releases! Either way, a newspaper story about your home-based business can spread the word more efficiently and economically than almost any form of paid advertising. The time and energy you put into crafting and submitting the press releases will be well worth the effort.
